Dahlia was laid to rest on November 1, 2023
Dahlia was a kind, gentle soul that despite having a broken down, arthritic body, enjoyed life to the fullest. Jeske found her standing by herself in the Colorado kill pen and couldn’t leave her behind. She is so glad she was able to give her the retirement she so deserved at Wild Spirit Mustangs. Winters were hard on her stiff, painful body, but she was always so excited for the lush green grass in May, knowing she would be eating it non-stop all the way through October. In the three years that Jeske had the absolute pleasure of caring for Dahlia, she taught her about resilience, and treating each day as a gift. She was protective of the youngsters (Sophia and Josie), and became close friends with lead mare, Rain, and with Ruthie. When her body just couldn’t keep up anymore we decided it was time to relieve her from the pain. She was returned to the earth at Wild Spirit Mustang on a beautiful, peaceful warm fall day surrounded by love and all of her herd mates. She is missed greatly.
Ruthie was laid to rest on October 13, 2025
Ruthie was in rough shape when she was rescued from a Colorado kill pen in December 2020. Upon arrival at Wild Spirit Mustangs we didn’t know if she was going to make it. She was extremely under weight, had terrible skin sores and was overall very weak. After about a week of intensive care, she started to have a little spark back in her eyes. We don’t know anything about her past, but one could wonder… she is extremely fearful of people, most likely due to being abused. She had recurring ulcers that had to be regularly treated with ulcer medication to keep her comfortable. Bouts of colic were common and she just never seemed to be feeling 100% healthy despite all the extra supplements we gave her. When she started to have a harder time keeping a healthy weight each winter and her ringbone acted up more this year, we decided it was time... We gave Ruthie 5 wonderful years full of love, attention and care, and we will miss seeing her enjoy the evening sunsets in the pasture.
Gris was laid to rest on October 13, 2025
Gris was saved from the Colorado kill pen in December of 2023. After rescuing him, we looked up his freeze brand and it turns out he is from the famous Pryor Mountain herd in Wyoming and he was almost 30 years old! He is an absolute gem of a horse and a fan favorite at Wild Spirit Mustangs. He’s not only a giant sweetheart and an old soul, he also takes amazing care of the littles that take riding lessons on him. He’s been an amazing mentor horse to the younger horses in the herd and when he comes along on trail rides or pack trips. He went through a very serious bout of laminitis when he first came to Wild Spirit Mustangs due to his metabolic sensitivities but thankfully we were able to fully rehabilitate him and adjust his diet and management accordingly to where he’s now thriving. He enjoyed his last couple of years enjoying his well earned retirement and loved grazing side by side with his favorite mare Ruthie. We laid Gris to rest peacefully together with Ruthie on a warm, sunny fall day eating all his favorite snacks.
